Abubakar Mahmud GumiChristian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed disappointment with Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over his alleged profiling of military operatives recently, while addressing some bandits in Tegina forest, a border town between Niger and Kaduna states. CAN told Gumi to withdraw his statement accusing some soldiers of engaging in criminalities, in the interest of peace and unity of the country. x Gumi had reportedly said: “Soldiers that are involved in most of the criminalities are not Muslims. Soldiers have Muslims and non-Muslims; the non-Muslims are the ones causing confusion just to ignite crisis.” In a statement yesterday in Abuja, General Secretary of CAN, Joseph Daramola, noted that anyone saying that Christian soldiers are the ones attacking bandits does not wish the country well,” adding that the Islamic cleric’s statement could lead to division in the country. ....
Punch Newspapers Sections Chukwudi Akasike THE Pan Niger Delta Forum has called on the Federal Government to declare the statements credited to an Islamic scholar, Sheik Abubakar Gumi, as “hate speech”. PANDEF Board of Trustees made this call on Wednesday in a communique signed by its members; Chief Edwin Clark, former Akwa Ibom State governor, Obong Victor Attah, and Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien. The forum expressed dissatisfaction that Gumi was inciting terrorists and bandits against Christian soldiers and equating them (terrorist and bandits) with Niger Delta agitators. Sheikh GumiCoalition of Niger Delta Agitators (CNDA) is demanding the arrest of an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State over their stance on bandits and armed herders in the country. The John Dukku-led group, comprising all major militant groups in the Niger Delta, alleged that the actions and utterances of the duo were indicative that they had been financing banditry and armed herdsmen in the country. x It condemned any form of negotiation with bandits, gun-carrying herdsmen, kidnappers and Boko Haram leaders and others terrorising innocent citizens across the country, declaring that such acts amounted to nothing but criminality. ....
Bandits plan to acquire anti-aircraft missiles –Gumi Oladimeji Ramon and Tony Okafor Influential Islamic cleric, Sheik Abubakar Gumi, has disclosed that bandits operating in the northern states forests are planning to acquire anti-aircraft missiles to repeal attacks by the military. Gumi, who recently went into forests in Zamfara State, to discuss with the bandits who have killed and rendered many people homeless, said his interaction with the bandits showed that they engage in kidnapping and collection of ransom for the purpose of raising money to buy weapons. Northern states have for long been under the siege of bandits who carry out relentless attacks on villagers, killing and maiming people, setting houses ablaze, and displacing villagers. ....
