The Havelock Chamber of Commerce has changed a scholarship’s name to Megan McGarvey, a board member who passed away last Wednesday, while the German shepherd rescue group she was volunteering with has expressed its sorrow at her passing.
The chamber also announced a celebration of life service for her to be held Thursday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at the Havelock Tourist & Event Center.
McGarvey, who has also worked at CarolinaEast Health System’s public relations department for 30-plus years, was delivering a rescue dog on May 22 when it bit her. As a result of the incident, she developed a blood infection that took her life four days later.
New Brown, a Pennsylvania native who relocated to Craven County 15 years ago, can still remember the young men in Valley Forge Military Hospital, the ones who returned from Vietnam crippled and maimed, the ones who, despite their injuries, would make a point of showing off for her in their wheelchairs.
The memory of those young men has risen again in Brown’s mind this week. As one of the 250 citizens who volunteered to serve at the The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall being displayed at Lawson Creek Park through Sunday, Brown lent her time and energy to help set up the “The Wall That Heals” when it arrived in town on April 7.
