Kent State student on the hunt for historic sculptures in Marion County One of Megan Calhoun s favorite sculptures is a grave marker for C.B. Merchant inside the Marion Cemetery. The marker is far from ordinary, as it consists of a large, granite ball sitting on top of a stone plinth. The Merchant Ball is known for mysteriously rotating off its base despite attempts to keep the ball in place. The piece of art is one of 13 sculptures Calhoun has discovered in Marion County and 70 total in central Ohio. The project is part of an internship the Kent State University student is doing with The Sculpture Center. The Cleveland-based arts nonprofit operates the Ohio Outdoor Sculpture (OOS) database, which is the largest online collection of images, historical data, and condition information of outdoor sculptures in the state. The database contains more than 1,500 sculptures. ....
