sunday show. as i was talking with nicholas wu about, even though we have known where senator manchin has been on this for months now, the news that he is a no on build back better is a political earthquake, isn t it? yeah, certainly is, jonathan. you re absolutely right. he didn t say anything differently this morning in theory that he s been saying all along for the past several months. he s been where he was, he started out that fox news interview saying that this is a megabill that he s felt this way since the summer when he called for the bill to be at $1.5 trillion or lower. but, look, this is sort of the final blow in this week of reporting that my colleagues and i have been doing up here on capitol hill, where we heard first on wednesday that breaking news that build back better was not going to happen this year at all. they re going to focus on voting rights first. then we heard from a couple of sources that build back better may actually not get done until march or april a
street is the lack is just a general lack of knowledge of what s actually in either part of this megabill. obviously the question before or after, that is, what will this plan do for black communities? i know that you have legislation included in the build back better act designed to reduce gun violence, but briefly tell us where does it fit in the $5 billion the president has allocated for community violence. intervention? i mean, where does it fit? it s in the build back better budget, and we re it fits is the funding will be administered by approximate health & human services agency. funding will be made available to communities across the country, not only big cities like chicago and new york, but cities like mine in north las vegas and in rural communities,
scenes in the house democratic caucus reporter: that s right. we re three days away from the major deadlines. what s happening behind the scenes, it started on the infrastructure bills speaker pelosi, the white house, senate democratic leader schumer are working vigorously to try to formulate the text of this megabill that we know is now nongoing to be $3.5 trillion it s going to be something less than that. and it is a crazy puzzle that they re trying to figure out because the dynamics remain complicated. i m told by my sources that senator joe manchin still has not outlined a specific top line number to the white house of how much money he s willing to spend. he still is in the phase of asking democrats in the white house to explain to him why this bill is necessary and why it s necessary now. and then you have people like senator kiersten cinema who also have their own demands
infrastructure bill upwards of $3.2 trillion. that one would be passed along party lines through the process of budget reconciliation. so now we ve got the text or we re waiting to get our hands on the text. but the text has been filed of this megabill which looks like something north of five reams of paper that now have to go through the regular process. they put a shell bill, place holder bill in until the next is done. now the text is done and we ll see what happens from here. it s not quite clear when the senate is going to adjourn. we mentioned senator mike lee of utah is speaking now. but they re trying to get some motion on this quickly because august recess is around the corner and democrats are trying to capitalize on some momentum for this and deal with progressives in the u.s. house. we re not entirely sure that the two bills will meet their policy needs. so the bill is in. we re trying to get our hands on it. we ll keep you updated through the evening and, of course, tomorr
pointing back and forth about who blew it on a deal for the so-called dreamers. that appears head ed for a major 20-18 campaign deal. lawmakers voting last night late night 65-32 in the senate to send it to president trump for his signature. a lot of people that supported the bill like the idea of helping rebuild the military with this funding. some complained about the way this megabill was handled. i would like for us to have some degree of discussion about this. in the future, either finish our business at a normal time or come back the next morning. but this is a ridiculous process that we go through where people extort us that we get so tired that we do whatever they wish us to do. it s worth noting that senator corker is retiring out of that frustration.
