New modelling undertaken on behalf of the Health Services Union indicates that an additional $20 billion over four years is needed to provide high-quality aged care, and these extra funds could be raised by increasing the Medicare levy from 2% to 2.65%:
HSU national president and NSW secretary Gerard Hayes… said HSU’s Medicare proposal would deliver the necessary funding and, if there was a better idea out there, he would “love to hear it”.
I staunchly oppose raising the Medicare Levy to fund aged care for the following reasons:
Over-65s are the wealthiest demographic in Australia, with over 80% owning their homes, whereas home ownership has collapsed for younger Australians. ....

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Our region has lost a great man

Lea Taylor
Lea Taylor was Mayor from 1991 to 1997 in Rockhampton city; he left the mayoral position to work on his property.
I met Lea Taylor in 2012 when he wanted to run for mayor and try and get a team of councillors elected with him, to ensure debt levels were reduced and that our region could have a strong future.

There is one thing that I will never forget about Lea, is the fact that he had a strong work ethic.
There were many long hours put into running campaigns and I remember at times, helping him produce videos up to 2am. ....
