Thunderbolt Pure Oil filling station now Airbnb with motorhead decor


At the corner of Bonaventure Road and Mechanics Avenue in Thunderbolt sits a slice of pure Americana. Pure, literally. It’s the building that was the Pure Oil filling station operated by Freddie Byrd in the 1940s and 1950s.
Frankie Kerby and Cookie Espinoza have revived it as an Airbnb studio apartment called The Gas Station.  Frankie is a self-described “motorhead” who loves all things historical and automotive, so they have worked to have the décor inside to reflect the building’s heritage.
A large print of a vintage black-and-white photo is a clear focal point. It shows three service station attendants in Pure uniforms and caps standing next to the gas pumps in front of the building.  Exactly as it could be photographed today. ....

New York state tax exemptions for senior citizens: COVID pandemic


Greenburgh Assessor Edye McCarthy said she sends our renewal notices at the end of December, alerting seniors that they need to have their documents to her by May 1. She said scores of Greenburgh seniors come to Town Hall with the documents.
She fears the pandemic could cause some homeowners to miss the 2021 deadline. She said it’s highly unusual for the income of senior citizens to change significantly from year to year.
“Many of our seniors don’t drive anymore,” she said. “Last year, many took a taxi to Town Hall, but now I’m hearing they don’t want to get into a taxi. They don’t want to go out. We need an answer in two weeks. Our seniors keep asking us what’s happening.” ....
