voter turnout was massive. far from the usual trickle of voters for an august primary in a midterm year. turnout approached presidential election levels. and the votes to defeat the anti-abortion measure didn t just come from the urban and suburban counties where most of the state s democrats live. many rural solidly republican counties voted no, or they voted yes, by incredibly slim margins. this vote in kansas is sending shock waves across the country for a number of reasons. for one thing, this was the first time abortion rights have been directly on the ballot since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade, and the outcome would seem to suggest that the backlash to that ruling, and to republican efforts in its wake to restrict or ban abortion is real, and it is very strong. also, this happened in a very red state. donald trump won kansas by 15 points less than two years ago.
0 by nearly 20 points. and what is remarkable about the outcome is that kansas republicans did everything they possibly could to stack the deck in their favor. for starters, they scheduled the vote during a typically aug of during the general election, in november, because yesterday s primary featured mostly republican candidates running against each other and therefore would presumably attract mostly republican voters. they made the language of the ballot measure so dense and confusing that the normal person would be hard-pressed to deciph ter at first glance what a yes or a no vote even meant. republican groups barraged out misleading text messages that meant it sound like yes would protect a woman s right to choose when in fact, the opposite was true. voter turnout was massive. far from the usual trickle of voters for an august primary in a midterm year. turnout approached presidential election levels. and the votes to defeat the anti-abortion measure didn t just come from the urban
business and those same-sex couples definitely don t want to go in those businesses. we spoke with a restaurant owner who posted a sign that says, all are welcome. take a listen to her reaction to this bill. if people are going to discriminate against people they should advertise it. the bill hasn t been heard on the house floor. what kind of feedback are you getting from your colleagues and fellow oklahomans about this bill and the amendment you ve posted? well i think a lot of my colleagues in the oklahoma legislature are, frankly, relieved that this measure didn t make it to the house floor yet. because they honestly don t want to vote on things like this. they may have to talk about this issue but they probably don t actually believe that businesses should have the right to discriminate against these couples. from oklahomans i ve gotten really good feedback.
i think a democrat won last time in 1994. that was it. this could be like a republican having a filibuster having success in the california legislation. texas is moving purple. immigration reform and texas moving more purple, democrat has little bit more of a chance perhaps in that state. texas has not look, georgia is moving faster than texas. that s the untold story. if anything, south carolina is moving faster. texas is still a way s off. that was that woman has got an interesting story. i don t know if she will be governor but sure got a story to tell. wendy davis is the star because she did the filibuster but let s talk about the people who stormed the capital and were cheering. the reason why the bill the measure didn t pass the first time was because of all the cheering in the gallery. they couldn t get the vote done. for me, while wendy davis is, you know, a star and she s a hero in the central figure in this drama, the people in texas who you see in the video
