To experiences you have. in sports we have collective experiences. clay travis spoke of hank gathers i spent time talking to my sons about hank gathers. i mentioned earlier a famous soccer player christian erickson who was administered cpr and has recovered and is in fact playing the game today. this is different because there was a collision involved here. not a particularly uniquely violent collision, but yet another variable in this equation right away but now again it s unique because we normally see spinal or head injuries when it comes to violence in football, not something that requires cpr. and i told you that one of my first pieces i ever worked on for espn on outside the lines was on myocardial contusion and brian kill me i think very well explained this earlier a heightened comodio cortis a blunt acute trauma to the chest that can disrupt the rhythm of the heart. it s very rare. happens in baseball and lacrosse
For espn and outside the line was on myocardial contusion, and we don t know. i don t know if that s what happened with them are jason, but it s certainly true in lacrosse or baseball that there. although rare, there are instances of athletes taking a hit to the chest. and it s suddenly disrupting the rhythm and effectiveness of the heart tomorrow. him hamlin s hit tonight really, honestly, for any football fan looked like nothing at all out of the ordinary, not particularly violent, not particularly dangerous and to see him get up is also not something you normally see when you see a catastrophic injury, so it s just shocking. well none of us know exactly what happened. i heard clay. you know, it s interesting sports is just such a collective consciousness. for all of us. it s our memory. it s our nostalgia. we go through these things together. i was in the car with my son s on the way home from the family christmas. listening to this on the radio, and i was explaining to my sons. the
Tugs at everybody s hearts. we can name sort of the famous ones we ve seen on television. but this is going to happen in your neighborhood, my neighborhood and all across this country. yeah you said when it s going to happen in these tragic accidents that happened in all of our lives. you re absolutely right. you know, i think what what happens here? jason is these types of moments look, we all pour a lot of emotion. i can t i love sports. in a way so many people you have on the phone loves sports is many people listening. love sports is because it s something we shared together, you know, and we bond to these teams and to these individuals, and you re absolutely right. while tragedy happens across this country on a personal level for so many people listening, this is what we experienced together. but we have even to experienced this particular type of situation. we just haven t jim brought up. reggie brown. i remember that, you know, and that s what you ve come to expect in football l
And the piece i was working on is whether there can be greater precautionary measures taken from professional to amateur and youth levels. and those measures included twofold, is there chest protection that can be word and is there an aed valuable. well there s both of those things available when it comes to professional football which to me only highlights sometimes in a game like football or lacrosse or baseball or anything that is physical, you cannot protect yourself ultimately against all of the dangers involved, not just in life, but in that sport. that is not a diagnosis. that is not me speculating what happened to damar hamlin. but it is perfect spigot from me covering sports and what i have watched in sports. i hope for the best and that it wasn t one of these scenarios and damar, his friends and his family have my prayers. jason: well said, will. you know, i played college football, albeit being a place
