It haunts us as parents of children with intellectual disabilities because it was said by a direct support professional – the type of worker who is critical to our children and their ability to live independently as a part of their community.

I work as a Direct Support Professional and there are thousands like me in Delaware who work in group homes and the day programs. We take care of our client’s personal needs, take them to the store and doctor’s appointments, feed and bathe them. Most of us work in this field because it fills us with so much joy, knowing the difference that we make in their lives.
