The other is state Rep. Ed Gainey, 51, of Lincoln-Lemington. Mayor Bill Peduto and North Side businessman Will Parker, 41, are also running for the Democratic nomination in the May 18 primary, but aren’t seeking the committee’s endorsement. ....

Ed Gainey The Pittsburgh mayoral race is well underway, and state Rep. Ed Gainey (D-Lincoln-Lemington) is setting up battle lines around the region’s preeminent medical powerhouse: UPMC.
In a virtual event on Feb. 23, Gainey spoke about his plans to fight for health care workers. This pledge came as SEIU Healthcare, the largest union of health care workers in the state, voiced their official support for Gainey’s mayoral bid.
“We can’t have a thriving community unless everyone pays their fair share,” said Gainey. “It is time.”
As part of his endorsement, Gainey rolled out an economic proposal for the city that includes reinstating a lawsuit to challenge the charitable status of UPMC. The hospital giant, which has several executives raking in multi-million-dollar salari ....

“City investments and strong unions gave previous generations of Pittsburghers an opportunity to succeed, but today we’re failing to use the tools of city government to lift up working people and hold our largest institutions accountable,” Gainey said in a statement. “We all want a city where everyone can earn a living, afford a good home, and feel safe in our neighborhoods. We all have to contribute to building that future together. We need to stop giving more and more to the wealthy and well-connected alrea ....
