NORTH MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) A sense of normalcy for the North Mankato community today as the Peppers returned to the field for the first day of practice.
A lot of excitement coming from Caswell Park as softball players return to the diamond.
“Just excited to get the girls out playing, practicing and having fun,” coach of the Peppers, Megan Fitzloff said.
The Peppers had their first practice of the season and players are thrilled to get back to doing what they love, and braving the Minnesota elements. ....

‘Jughead,’ a dog whose head got stuck inside a plastic container and eluded capture in North Mankato for weeks in 2015 was renamed Gulliver after his rescue. ‘Gulliver’ was suggested as the name for one of North Mankato bike trails during a naming contest.

NORTH MANKATO — “Jughead” the hapless dog later renamed Gulliver, who got his head stuck in a plastic jar and was seen running around with it for weeks, could have been immortalized with his name donning a North Mankato bike trail. But Gulliver didn’t make the cut.
The North Mankato City Council in a workshop Monday heard from Mayor Mark Dehen, an avid bicyclist, who worked with the city’s bicycle commission to come up with official names for five recreation/bike loops and trails in the city. The city requested that residents submit ideas for trail names, with “Gulliver” being one of the sugges ....

A seemingly minor dispute between neighbors in North Mankato about the look of a yard offers larger issues to consider, including competing environmental interests and equal application of the law.
A just resolution of the case could reflect well on North Mankato civic life, while an unjust resolution could feed a festering frustration among city residents who would like to promote natural yards and pollinator gardens.
The City Council summoned Edward Borchardt to a hearing last week to discuss and debate his Allan Avenue property, which neighbors described as unkempt and he considers “natural.”
After hearing from three people supporting Borchardt’s approach to landscaping and two neighbors who say they have complained for years, the City Council cited his property as a “nuisance property” but gave him until June 1 to come into compliance with a somewhat vague city ordinance. ....
