Striking Artwork On Reopened Central City Jetty

The
history of Hamilton’s five local hapuu is the inspiration
behind spectacular new artwork on the Waikato
River.
The artwork has been incorporated into the new
central city jetty, which is now open for anyone to use,
below Waikato Museum. The new jetty is a floating pontoon
that can rise and fall with river levels and replaces the
previous fixed wooden structure.
Meanwhile, a new
revetment wall running below the jetty, will help make the
riverbank more accessible, so more people can enjoy the
riverside.
The artwork includes five pou (pillars)
featuring sculptures representing ancestral stories from ....

Top developer Matt Stark slams Hamilton's 'innovating' street as an 'embarrassment'

Stark Property Developer Matt Stark told
Stuff the changes are “setting the city up to fail and stopping us from progressing any upgrades on other streets throughout Hamilton”.
“We’re trying to do things on a shoestring budget and deliver something that’s an embarrassment from a design perspective.”

A new plan is guiding the next stage of Hamilton’s
central city transformation.
Today (29 April),
Hamilton City Council approved a refresh of its Central City
Transformation Plan (CCTP), to guide development and
decision making and set the direction for the city’s
future.
The last CCTP (2015) included key projects
such as Victoria on the River, a city asset which is now a
hub for city dwellers, shoppers, and visitors alike. Since
then, residential populations are on the rise and
significant investment into infrastructure projects and new
development has provided the opportunity to reshape and
refocus the CCTP. ....

Public to have say on Māori wards in Hamilton

Earlier this month, the council voted eight to four against a move to establish Māori wards in time for the 2022 elections. Days later, however, in a rare move, Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate and five councillors put forward a motion to redebate the issue.
Southgate said the decision delaying the creation of Māori wards for at least three years had caused pain and division in the community. One of the council’s five Maangai Māori, Hemi Rau, resigned from his position following the initial vote.

City businesses fear for livelihoods if plan to strip street of car parks goes ahead

About 14 parks will remain in the street, along with a cycleway, gardens, seats and even barbecues that will be installed in a bid to draw people to the area.
Many of those people will be workers at the new Waikato Regional Council headquarters further up the street. Construction on that building will be completed in May.
The trial is being conducted in partnership with Waka Kotahi, which will fund 90 per cent of the cost. A portion of nearby Rostrevor St will also be closed off to traffic from April 19 until early July as part of the trial, and the Ward St trial – which will cost $540,000 – will begin at the end of the month. ....
