Just nine days after Mike Polisky was promoted as Northwestern s new athletic director, Polisky resigned from his post following significant criticism and a community-wide protest organized by faculty members.
My love and respect for Northwestern and for our student-athletes, coaches and staff, is greater than my own desire to lead the department, Polisky said in a statement. Two incoming alderpeople have raised a complaint alleging the outgoing City Council does not have the power to pass ordinances at its Monday night meeting.
The 81st City Council will be sworn in tonight, but not before the lame duck council votes on some contentious items including the lease of the Harley Clarke Mansion, the contract for selling water to Skokie and the approval of changes to the city’s Board of Ethics procedures.

Outgoing Mayor Steve Hagerty said in an April 27 council meeting that the May 10 council meeting would be a “handover” to the next City Council, and that April 27 was the 80th City Council’s last meeting. ....

Evanston Police Departmentâs aerial fleet is unassuming: a single four-rotor drone, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
While small, the drone makes up the entirety of an Unmanned Aerial System program, jointly operated by Evanstonâs police and fire departments. A year after purchase, the drone has not yet been employed in the field. As the departments work to get the program airborne, however, questions of legality remain around some of the droneâs intended uses.
The droneâs primary benefit is its ability to perform tasks such as water rescue and live fire analysis faster and more safely than a team of officers, according to police sergeant Scott Sophier. Sophier coordinates the UAS program, in addition to supervising EPDâs Community Policing Unit, a team of officers tasked with fostering trust between police and the community. ....

In the wake of Evanston’s election results getting finalized, organizers, electees and residents said they are looking forward to the potential for positive change under new local officials.
Candidates campaigned in the most crowded election cycle in decades, school board races featured a prominent push for racial equity and long-entrenched alderpeople were unseated. Many residents said it’s important not to throw in the towel after a long election cycle. Instead, the results can be a springboard for a new season of change.
Kristen White, a longtime resident and Evanston/Skokie School District 65 parent, said she believes the election of District 65 board members Soo La Kim, Elisabeth “Biz” Lindsay-Ryan, Joseph “Joey” Hailpern and Donna Wang Su will continue a vision of enacting anti-racist policies. Of the four, Wang Su is the only newcomer to the board. ....
