The building was built in 1709 and served as the home of the Van Houten family. The Van Houten family settled all throughout the Totowa area and were avid supporters of the American Revolution. During the midst of the conflict, they offered their home as the headquarters to General Henry Knox in the summer and fall of 1780. In 1818, the house was sold to the Van Allen family who maintained ownership until 1928. Since then, the building has been known as the Board of Recreation office.
