A former Christchurch mayor has used a public hearing to disclose details of a $95,000 report which touts millions of dollars in potential cost savings and is being kept secret by the city’s council.
The council defends the confidentiality, saying the report contains information about individuals and employment matters. But the report s secrecy raises echoes of a council excoriated less than two years ago for abusing public information laws. ....

Chlorine 'not the only way' to get safe water, Christchurch council says

The city council s three waters boss, Helen Beaumont, said the Government was treating chlorine as a silver bullet, “whereas it’s not the only way to deliver safe water”.

Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel will present the council’s submission to the Government s health select committee.
Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner, who oversees the council committee that will sign off the draft submission on Thursday, said Christchurch would be a good candidate for an exemption from chlorine.
