Des Moines crime: Man stabbed, in critical condition, police say


An 18-year-old man was in critical condition following a Wednesday afternoon stabbing, according to the Des Moines Police Department.
Police said the stabbing was reported around 3:34 p.m. at a business in the 3700 block of E. 14th St. Sgt. Paul Parizek, the police spokesman, did not immediately respond to an inquiry from the Des Moines Register. He told TV station KCCI that the stabbing occurred at a Subway restaurant. 
A police news release said the man was taken to MercyOne Medical Center.
The news release said police detained a potential suspect based on witness statements. The investigation was continuing.

Andrea Sahouri says her acquittal Wednesday on two criminal charges sends an important message about recognizing the rights of journalists to do their jobs.
The jury made the right decision, said Sahouri, a reporter for the Des Moines Register. They made the decision to uphold democracy, a just democracy, the freedom of the press, First Amendment rights, the list goes on.
Sahouri was arrested while covering the George Floyd protests in May 2020, and charged with failure to disperse and interference with official acts, both simple misdemeanors. Police claimed she remained in the area of the May 31 protest in Des Moines despite orders to leave, and tried to pull away when a Des Moines police officer pepper-sprayed her and detained her. ....

Testimony begins in Register reporter Andrea Sahouri trial, two DMPD officers take stand

Prosecutors have begun making their case against Des Moines Register reporter Andrea Sahouri, who faces charges stemming from her arrest during the George Floyd protests in May 2020.
Sahouri, a breaking news reporter for the Register, was arrested May 31 while covering a protest outside the Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines. She and her then-boyfriend, Spenser Robnett, were pepper-sprayed and charged with failure to disperse and interference with official acts. Both charges are simple misdemeanors with a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Polk County Attorney Brad Kincade and student attorney Brecklyn Carey. Carey argued the case boils down to three questions: Were Sahouri and Robnett ordered to disperse; did they do so; and when arrested, did they attempt to pull away? ....

Des Moines Journalist Arrested While Covering Social Justice Protests Faces Trial Monday

Sahouri is set to stand trial Monday on misdemeanor charges, a case that prosecutors have pursued despite international condemnation from advocates for press freedom.
Many free press advocates, like Amnesty International and the Iowa Freedom of Information Council, have called on the charges against Des Moines Register reporter Andrea Sahouri to be dropped. The program director for the Committee to Protect Journalists says not only should the charges be dropped, but an investigation should be launched looking into what lead to the arrest of a working journalist who identified herself as a member of the press. ....
