도서관 사서 로 지내던 계훈모가, 갑작스레 전공도 아닌 언론연표 작업에 뛰어든 건 왜일까? 연세대학교 도서관학과 초빙교수였던 엘로드(J. McRee Elrod)의 요청이 계기였다. 엘로드는 한국에 선교사로 와서, 연세대 도서관 부관장과 도서관학과 교수를 지냈다. 엘로드 저자기호법 으로 알려진, 저자명 문자식 기호법을 고안한 사람이 바로 엘로드다.
미국에서 도서관학 석사 학위를 받은 엘로드는, 연세대가 한국 최초로 도서관학과(지금의 문헌정보학과)를 개설할 때, 교수로 학생을 가르쳤다. 당시 연세대 도서관학과에는 엘로드 외에도, 외국인 교수로 스와이거(Ethel Swiger), 버제스(Roberts S. Burgess), 크로슬린(Kenneth Croslin)이 있었다.
