Councillor: Let's bowl CBD offices to make way for apartments

The northern part of Hamilton s central business district should be demolished and replaced with apartments and other kinds of residential dwellings, according to city councillor Ewan Wilson.
A large chunk of office and commercial space in central Hamilton could be wiped off the map and replaced with high density housing if a city councillor gets his way.
Hamilton’s central business district is the scene of an ongoing residential revolution with numerous apartment developments either recently built or under construction.
And it is a revolution that could soon gain pace, following the adoption on Thursday of a “refresh” of the Hamilton City Council’s central city transformation plan. ....

Māori ward u-turn splits Hamilton politicians

Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate says she experienced some unpleasant incidents following the council s vote on Thursday (file photo).
The debate over Māori wards in Hamilton is threatening to fracture the council as some city politicians push to revisit the issue.
In a rare move, Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate​ and five councillors are seeking to revoke a council decision preventing the introduction of Māori wards in time for the 2022 election.
Council last week voted eight to four to postpone making a call on the issue – triggering the immediate resignation of Hēmi Rau,​ one of the council’s five Māngai Māori. ....

Hamilton To Revisit Maaori Wards


Last week Council voted against introducing
Maaori wards for the 2022-25 triennium.
But it did
unanimously vote to strengthen Maaori representation and
participation, including consideration of wards. It also
voted to strengthen the role of Maangai Maaori following the
adoption of a strategy, He Pou Manawa Ora. That draft
strategy was developed alongside Maaori.
Today Council
was advised a majority of Councillors had formally sought to
revoke last week’s decision. The revocation was formally
supported by Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate along with
Councillors Ryan Hamilton, Maxine van Oosten, Dave
Macpherson, Martin Gallagher, and Sarah Thomson. Other
Councillors may yet sign it. ....
