H.R. 2687 On April 20, U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García reintroduced a bill that would raise insurance requirements for motor carriers from $750,000 to $4.92 million and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is not happy about it. OOIDA took to Facebook Monday, pleading with truckers to take action against the proposed 556% increase in coverage.
The case for Garcia argues that the Insurance Act is necessary as the minimum insurance requirement has not been increased since 1980. In June of last year, when House lawmakers voted to increase insurance minimums to $2 million, proponents of the amendment argued that the current insurance liability requirement does not adequately compensate victims of accidents involving large trucks. The biggest, the heaviest and the ugliest – Frank Film tracks down the winners at the Little River Giant Pumpkin Festival
They don t taste too good but they certainly pull the crowds.
Last month, despite drying hills and a dearth of tourists, around 3000 people descended on Little River to see a 230kg monster pumpkin grown by Max & Julianne Farrell take away the top prize in the annual Big Boy pumpkin competition.
“It took six of us to lift it on to the back of the track,” Max Farrell told Frank Film. “Five very strong men and me. But it is only my second time here, so I’m rapt.” ....

American Central Transport President and COO Phil Wilt said getting more disciplined about load acceptance hasn t been easy, but it s led to increased driver satisfaction and ultimately greater company efficiency. It s hard to tell someone you don t want to haul their freight, but we re at a point where we re doing it, and I see it every day in our metrics, our deadhead and our load count, Wilt said. Those are disciplines that we have put into play, but it really was in our mind initially of how do we retain drivers? How do we value drivers? How do we live out our culture? How do we earn the right for them to continue to drive for us? ....
