Last week’s photo was of some tree roots on the Sifto loop. The Sifto loop is notable for having a very old oak tree which began life around 1780. This area is also a good place to see birds, both among the bushes and in the Maitland River. Two birders were out recording some bird songs on May 4. The Sifto loop is also part of the “Sort of Scavenger hunt.”
Sometimes a windfall exposes an interesting entanglement of tree roots, such as one seen at Bannockburn Tract. There are many places on our trails where tree roots are exposed, having started on a rotting log, which has eventually disappeared, for example the birch tree on the Mavis Trail (there are also several good examples in the Maitland Woods). ....
