​Maui Island in Hawaii ravaged by wildfires propelled by strong winds​

Devastating wildfires have engulfed Maui Island, Hawaii, resulting in at least 106 deaths, marking it the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century. The fires, which began on August 8, forced thousands, including tourists, to evacuate. Notably affected was the historic city of Lahaina, which saw damage or destruction of 2,200 buildings, 86% being residential. The city, once the Hawaiian Kingdom s capital and now a tourist hotspot, may face rebuilding costs estimated at $5.5 billion by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). While the biggest fire in Lahaina was 85% contained, covering 2,170 acres, another in upcountry/Kula consumed 678 acres and was 75% contained. Smaller fires elsewhere were completely contained. The causes of these fires remain unknown. Prevailing conditions included high winds and dry weather, with warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
