Community members can offer input on the South Maui Community Plan update during a second phase of vision workshops, the county Planning Department announced Tuesday.
The online workshop will allow residents to review four draft visions based on public input received during the first phase of vision workshops held in January.
After the workshop, planners will use community input to craft a vision that will be included in the draft South Maui Community Plan, which will be forwarded to the South Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee later this year.
Community plans help guide the future of each community by outlining goals and recommendations for the area’s long-term needs. The West Maui Community Plan is currently undergoing Maui County Council review, and planning officials are in the early stages of updating the South Maui plan.

Maui County residents are counting on elected officials to more effectively manage tourism by planning for a future that prioritizes community needs and by caring for our precious island resources.
Concerns about overreliance on tourism are seen in recent news stories, public opinion surveys and discussions among friends and family. While the downturn caused by COVID-19 necessitated self-reflection by government and industry leaders, many of us have been envisioning a different future for a long time.
In an interview on Hawaii Public Radio’s “The Conversation” on March 8, 2019 early in my first term I voiced concerns about crowded beaches and roads, strained infrastructure and visitor incursions into remote areas, causing safety risks for people and environmental damage to our ecological and cultural resources. As a legislator and concerned parent, I’ve remained committed to advocating for a reassessment of how we allocate our limited assets.

Participate in the West Maui Affordable Housing Survey
By Staff | Mar 5, 2021 Do you live or work on the West Side? The West Maui Taxpayers Association (WMTA) is conducting a survey to understand where you would like to see housing built for you and your family. There is no question that affordable housing is needed. WMTA explained that the mission of this survey is to “… have the West Maui Community Plan, WMCP, reflect the opinions and direction the West Maui residents and employees believe are important, which will encourage affordable mixed-use development in West Maui areas of Olowalu and Launiupoko.” Participation in the survey is voluntary and anonymous.

The Maui County Planning Department will host a series of virtual “vision workshops” this month for the South Maui Community Plan update.
South Maui residents are encouraged to attend a workshop to brainstorm ideas with their neighbors and envision what the community should look and feel like in 20 years. All four workshops will have the same agenda, so people should only sign up for one workshop so that as many as possible can participate, the county said.
The workshops will take place on Zoom on the following dates and times:
