Photo courtesy Lahaina Restoration Foundation The more than 100-year-old Pioneer Mill Co. office building in Lahaina, a state-registered historic place that has been sitting vacant since the turn of the century, is slated to be restored for future public use. But first, officials are seeking input from residents, who are already pitching suggestions such as a museum, a hospital or public health facility, a senior services center, a co-working space or an art or creative center.

Virtual town hall to discuss South Maui projects | News, Sports, Jobs

The Maui News The Maui County Planning Department will hold a virtual town hall on April 27 to discuss upcoming transportation projects in South Maui. The meeting will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and will be livestreamed on the department’s “We Are South Maui” Facebook page. It is part of the South Maui Community Plan update process. Panelists from state and county agencies will discuss future street improvements planned for the South Maui region and answer the public’s questions about the area’s transportation network. Topics will include state and county road projects to address safety and congestion issues, planned pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, future upgrades for Piilani Highway and future plans for the Maui Bus system.

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo With Puamana Beach Park still closed as it faces ongoing erosion, shoreline experts say it could become the norm as rising global temperatures and sea levels continue to impact coastal beach parks and properties across Maui. “Puamana, and many areas in West Maui, will continue to be subject to expanding and more frequent impacts from ocean flooding and erosion during periods of high tides and high waves,” Tara Owens, coastal processes and hazards specialist with the University of Hawaii’s Sea Grant College Program, said earlier this month.

The Maui News The Maui County Planning Department will host a series of virtual “vision workshops” this month for the South Maui Community Plan update. South Maui residents are encouraged to attend a workshop to brainstorm ideas with their neighbors and envision what the community should look and feel like in 20 years. All four workshops will have the same agenda, so people should only sign up for one workshop so that as many as possible can participate, the county said.
