Former governors John Mruttu (pictured- Taita Taveta), Issa Timamy (Lamu) and Hussein Dado (Tana River) are among the region’s political giants who lost in the 2017 elections and are crafting a comeback. In Mombasa, businessman Suleiman Shahbal, who has twice come second to governor Hassan Joho in the gubernatorial contest, has started preparations for the seat after he closed ranks with the governor. Mr Shahbal has gone as far as embracing ODM leader Raila Odinga and has assembled a team comprising former governor Joho’s political strategists Major (Rtd) Abdulrahman Idris and Rashid Bezimba. ....
THE STANDARD By Patrick Beja | February 2nd 2021 at 00:00:00 GMT +0300 More than 20 elected leaders from the Coast region yesterday gathered at a private location in Nyali, Mombasa, amid the growing clamour for a local political party. Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho (pictured) and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi led the leaders in the closed-door forum, which was skipped by Deputy President William Ruto’s allies. Joho has announced plans to seek the presidency through ODM while Kingi has declared intention to unveil a political party for Coast by June. But Ruto’s allies dismissed the meeting, saying it had failed the test of uniting the residents. ....

[File, Standard] An election fever has gripped the port of Mombasa as 19 aspirants seek to unseat Dock Workers Union (DWU) General Secretary Simon Sang. Although the union elections are slated for the second week of April, campaigns have started early following persistent wrangles among top officials. Apart from internal wrangles running back to the last union polls in 2016 when he faced only three rivals, Sang is at war with several private firms at the port, including one associated with the family of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, over alleged secret plan to privatise the port. ....
Others vying are Hanningtone Onyango (Movement for Democratic Growth), David Ayieko (Kadu-Asili) and independent candidates Dan Osila, Joshua Ogada and Walter Okello. At Wachira Youth Polytechnic, only 120 voters had cast their votes out of the 591 registered voters by mid-day. At Bar Union Primary School, 214 of the over 1,500 registered voters had voted by 10am. At the Coast, besides the low voter turnout in Wundanyi-Mbale Ward, there were claims of voter bribery.
