A new state of matter: Liquid glass

A new state of matter: Liquid glass Neither liquid nor solid. Image of the position and orientation of ellipsoidal particles in clusters of a liquid glass. Image credit: Research groups of Professor Andreas Zumbusch and Professor Matthias Fuchs Glass is a ubiquitous material, but it represents a major scientific conundrum. Contrary to what one might expect, the true nature of glass remains something of a mystery. Glass is definitely but conventionally. Commonly, when material changes from a liquid to a solid-state, the molecules line up to form a crystal pattern. In glass, this doesn’t occur. Instead, the particles are adequately frozen completely still before crystallization happens.

Newly Discovered 'Liquid Glass' Represents a New State of Matter

Newly Discovered ‘Liquid Glass’ Represents a New State of Matter Researchers have discovered a new state of matter, a liquid glass that has remained hidden for two decades. The discovery could help scientists see through this ubiquitous material’s secrets.  Image Credit: Benoit Daoust/shutterstock An entirely new state of matter has been discovered by researchers at the University of Konstanz. The ‘liquid glass’ found by the team has been the subject of speculation in the scientific community for around 20 years. The researchers believe that it could both answer lingering questions about glass whilst simultaneously adding a layer of complexity to one of mankind’s most trusted materials.
