Taft Midway Driller A Taft man has pleaded no contest to vandalism and attempted escape charges filed after Taft Police said he tried to break out of a patrol car transporting him from Taft to Kern County Jail in Bakersfield. Kenneth Dean Patton and another man, identified as Matthew Boller were arrested by Taft Police on June 11 in the 300 block of Naylor. Patton was wanted on three felony warrants, taft Police Sgt. Corely Beilby said. Boller originally gave officers a false name, Beilby said, but officers were able to ascertain his identity and arrest hom on warrants from Bakersfield. Boller ran from officers while handcuffered, Beielby said, but was quickly caught. ....
i was absolutely shocked. my stomach dropped out and i felt shocked. reporter: since his brain had no space to develop doctors had to perform surgery on him at just 10 weeks old. his pediatrician caught this early at the well baby check at the two-month mark. we needed to cut out the fused bone that was on the top of his head. reporter: that surgery was a success. for four months, matthew wore this helmet 24 hours a day to aid in his recovery. doctors saying catching the condition early was also crucial. there are different things that we look for, which is a misshapen skull, long skinny head with a wide, prominent forehead. reporter: and despite matthew s surgery, his relieved parents say it took him only three days to get back to his bubbly self. [ laughter ] reporter: this bouncing baby boy lucky to be alive after what was initially thought to be an unusual shaped head turned out to be something much more serious. we always had noticed that his head was a little bit of an abnormal shape. it was very different from his sister s but we really didn t think anything of it. reporter: it was nearly nine months ago matthew boller s doctors discovered he had a rare disorder called sagittal synostosis where the skull bones fuse together limiting the brain s growth. it affects one out of every 2,000 live births. ....
