CYBERSPACE The popular chat app Discord, with a reported 300 million registered users, announced Tuesday that it will ban servers that include adult content but only for users of Apple’s iOS, the operating system used on iPhones and iPads. Users of Android devices will continue to have access to all of the estimated 6.7 million servers used to host text, audio and video chats on a wide range of topics.
The service is focused primarily on video games, and is largely used by gamers to exchange messages during play. Each chat group dedicated to a specific topic is called a “server.” But gaming groups and others have long been plagued by extremist rhetoric and hate-filled comments.
A new Discord policy removes NSFW servers from the iPhone and iPad apps in order to comply with an unidentified Apple policy.
On Tuesday, Discord announced that it would begin classifying servers based on content, specifically NSFW content. Not all NSFW content is in danger, however, and only applies to servers that focus on NSFW content only.
The company isn t providing much insight into the issue. According to
Mashable, a spokesperson simply stated that the change was to comply with Apple s policies. Which policy and why is not clear.
One possible reason is the app s age rating. On March 22, Discord announced that it had to update its age rating from 12+ to 17+ upon Apple s request. This means that any minor with an Apple ID would not be able to download the Discord app if parental controls were on.
Discord blocks iOS users from NSFW servers, blames Apple
Well, hm.
Discord just put Apple customers at the kids table.Â
The group chat service quietly announced Tuesday that, going forward, it will block iOS users â including those 18 and older â from accessing NSFW servers on the iOS Discord app. Discord servers typically consist of themed voice or text channels, and the company calls them the spaces on Discord.
According to a Discord spokesperson, the new policy, which will go into effect over the next several days, is an effort to to comply with Apple s policies[.]
This block does not apply to Discord users on Android devices, and does not apply to those accessing Discord from its website.Â
