Ex-Hawaii QB Colt Brennan took something laced with fentanyl before he was found unconscious at a California hospital and ultimately died, his father said.
Record-setting former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan died at Hoag Hospital in Newport, California on Monday
He was in his fifth month of rehab in Costa Mesa when he was recently found unresponsive, according to his father
His father said he took him to a hospital emergency room on Sunday because his son had been drinking
But the detox facility was full, so without his family realizing it, Colt was released
He was unconscious when he was taken back to the hospital, where he later died, his father said
After a brief NFL stint in 2008 and 2009, Brennan had struggled in recent years following the traumatic brain injury he suffered in a 2010 auto wreck
