WhatsApp to move ahead with controversial privacy policy despite outcry

WhatsApp will go ahead with the launch of its controversial privacy policy update but will “clear up any confusion” and let users read the new updates “at their own pace”.
The Facebook-owned company said, in the coming weeks, it will display a banner in the app providing additional information about the impending privacy features.
The new privacy updates led to a public outcry and mass exodus of the platform’s new as well as existing users to competitors such as Signal and Telegram.
WhatsApp came under fire as users were worried the platform would share their confidential chats and business messages with parent company Facebook. It also led to legal challenges in India and regulatory probes. ....

WhatsApp is likely to see 15% users in India move away, says LocalCircles survey
Instant messaging app WhatsApp recently announced the updating of its privacy policy terms from February 8, 2021. After this date users will have no choice but to accept these terms to use the app.
This has led to a backlash with many users migrating to alternate platforms. A survey by LocalCircles finds that WhatsApp is likely to see 15% users in India move away, while 36% will reduce usage drastically. ....

WhatsApp's privacy policy explained: Why messaging app's users are porting to Signal, Telegram

WhatsApp’s new terms of service and privacy policies, which were updated earlier this week, are causing a migration of the messaging application’s user base to more privacy-oriented options such as Signal. Some are even mulling moving to Telegram. Acceptance of the new policies, which users are being alerted to via in-app notifications, is mandatory, failing which users would lose access to WhatsApp from February 8, 2021. The new policies allow for a closer integration of WhatsApp into the larger Facebook ecosystem and group of companies. It is worth noting that WhatsApp’s users in the European Union are exempted from the sharing their data with Facebook (more on this below). ....
