Nanjing Massacre, conventional Nanking Massacre, also called Rape of Nanjing, (December 1937–January 1938), mass killing and ravaging of Chinese citizens and capitulated soldiers by soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Army after its seizure of Nanjing, China, on December 13, 1937, during the Sino-Japanese War that preceded World War II. The number of Chinese killed in the massacre has been subject to much debate, with most estimates ranging from 100,000 to more than 300,000. Outrage over military honors affects Japanese festival in China

Beijing, Jul 28 (Prensa Latina) Several cities in China canceled the Japanese festival, known as Matsuri, amid the indignation caused by a Buddhist temple in Nanjing, because it honored the ihai mortuary tablets of four Japanese soldiers prosecuted for war crimes.

Temples urged to check tablets

Many Buddhist associations across China have demanded temples check their memorial tablets after a temple in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, was found to have had tablets commemorating Japanese war criminals for about four years.
