very little sunshine. a good day for the embassy tour, going in and out, not too bad. good day to find somewhere inside and dry. thanks, chuck. okay. in our headlines now, crews in louisiana are preparing to slowly open an emergency spillway today. they hope this will save some of the south s biggest cities from historic flooding. in return, though, millions of acres in the bayou state and thousands of homes will be intentionally flooded. nbc s kurt gregory explains. reporter: the water is coming. the region s worst flooding in 70 years has already swallowed parts of vicksburg, mississippi. there s no way to prepare but move out. reporter: and louisiana is next. today, the army corps of engineers will open the morganza spillway to ease flood levels on the mississippi river and protect baton rouge and new orleans. protecting lives is the number one priority. reporter: the decision impacts louisiana s most populated corridor. opening the spillway will ....

flood gates to protect heavily populated parts of louisiana. randall pinkston shows you how that decision could put thousands of homes in jeopardy. reporter: the rising mississippi river is already starting to seep over the morganza spillway. the army corps of engineers could open the gates on saturday, and that could relieve pressure on levee, protecting baton rouge from flooding. we re trying to take the excess water off the river. reporter: there is a tradeoff. if the spillway opens, some of the mississippi will merge with another river, and that will unleash a tonight of water over low-lying homes, farms and businesses. an estimated 3 million acres will be flooded and about 25,000 people could lose their homes. there is nothing we can do about it. get our stuff out. and hope for the best. reporter: this is overflow from the yazou river, a main tributary of the mississippi. here north of victimsburg, it is flowing backwards, inundating farmlands and putting ....
