York United attacking midfielder Mateo Hernández is joining teammate Lisandro Cabrera on loan with Dominican Republic side Atlético Pantoja, the club announced Wednesday,
Hernández, 22, first joined York last October from his native Argentina and Primera División side Club Atlético Colón and joins Cabrera on a deal until the end of the year, with York retaining the right to recall the player with notice.
Hernández has spent his entire career thus far with Colón, starting in the youth ranks to make a handful of appearances with the first team last season – including against some of Argentina’s biggest outfits, such as Banfield and Argentinos Juniors.

A DuPage County group is helping Latino workers heal from the mental trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disproportionately is affecting communities of color.
Wheaton-based Immigrant Solidarity DuPage is using $15,000 in state funding to organize peace circles where essential workers employed in DuPage County factories and warehouses can talk with their peers in Spanish about their challenges dealing with COVID-related deaths, poverty and hunger. Participants mostly are from Addison, Glendale Heights and West Chicago.
York United is the first CPL club to fill all their international slots for the 2021 campagain.
“The Colombian market is one that we have looked at in some depth this off-season,” York United managing consultant Angus McNab said in a release, referring to fellow Colombian league standout Hernández.
“I feel that it offers phenomenal value and there are a larger proportion of young talents that would be realistic targets for us in both the 1st and 2nd divisions than in other competitions in South America. Sebastian’s experience, having logged over 3000 minutes in Colombia, was very attractive and impressive given he has only just turned 23. He was a little unfortunate with how 2020 played out as the pandemic couldn’t come at a worse time for a free agent but that’s certainly played in our favour here.”
