With more than 350 entries, Registered Master Builders House of the Year showcases the innovation and creativity being delivered by New Zealand s building sector.
What s new in house design and construction? Some of the people best positioned to answer this question are the judges in the 2020 Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards, who viewed more than 350 entries last year. Projects ranged from value builds to multimillion-dollar dwellings and multi-unit developments, with entries showcasing the latest trends, innovation and creativity. Master Builders says the entries also reflected the shifting values among New Zealanders, with sustainability increasingly a priority.

A number of local properties won regional awards in the annual Master Builders House of the Year awards, including the winner of the Supreme Auckland New Home award.
These homes all went into the national final, held on December 11, results of which were not available when the paper went to print but can be found at houseoftheyear.co.nz/
Above, PSL Construction took out three top awards for this home in Dairy Flat: Auckland Supreme New Home Award, the New Home over $2 million category and the Craftsmanship Award. The home is described as “an exceptional build”, including achieving high quality detailing across a variety of complex and challenging materials.

The house was stripped back to allow for wall straightening and strengthening. It also has a new roof and cladding. Judges said the Taupō renovation, two years in the making, was an impressive example of collaboration between the passionate homeowners, a clever designer, and a craftsman builder. “Renovations always present challenges, require great planning, and need a lot of thinking along the way to incorporate the new, maintain the old, and create a seamless result. “From the Hinuera stone personally laid at the entry, to the endless straightening of the original structure to cope with the unforgiving new light from the atrium windows on the gib board, the workmanship has been executed beautifully.”
