The Worcester Red Sox had two major-league-caliber utilitymen at the top of their lineup on Saturday afternoon as Boston Red Sox outfielder Kiké Hernández made his first rehab appearance with the WooSox, and Danny Santana continued to work his way back toward the major league roster.
Hernandez is in Worcester rehabbing from a right hamstring injury. He left the Red Sox game on May 6 with tightness and looked to be running well on the leg during Saturday’s game. Hernandez had three plate appearances as the DH in the leadoff spot. He was hit with a pitch on the forearm to lead off the game and scored on a two-run home run from Santana. He also flied out to center and struck out swinging.

When the Red Sox became affiliated with the Portland Sea Dogs in 2003, one of the first orders of business at Hadlock Field was to build a replica of Fenway Park’s Green Monster in left field. The “Maine Monster” was built 37 feet high, just like its inspiration, giving Double-A players a taste of what their home park would be like if they were called up to Boston.
When the Red Sox’ new spring training home in Fort Myers, Jet Blue Park, was designed, its dimensions matched Fenway’s, though the Green Monster in Florida is three feet taller and features seating inside rather than on top.

WORCESTER Years of planning and hard work finally came to realization as professional baseball players took the field at Polar Park for the first time on April 1. The first five days of alternate site action in Worcester featured a wet workout, an ace appearance and a historic home run, among plenty of other storylines.
The tarp was on the field to begin the day on April 1, but although the Boston Red Sox were forced to postpone their Opening Day due to the weather, the WooSox were able to get in a workout, eventually getting onto the infield dirt for practice. Red Sox Director of Player Development and Worcester native Brian Abraham was on hand for day one of the alternate site and got a chance to see the reality of professional baseball in his hometown.

Just a year ago Tuesday, the dirt lot that became Polar Park saw the first steel beam go up as construction on Worcester’s new ballpark got underway. These days, it’s looking just about ready to welcome the new Worcester Red Sox as the park finishes taking shape.
With Opening Day at Polar Park pushed back to May 11, the construction has primarily focused on making sure the players have everything they need in April, when the park will open as the Red Sox’s alternate site. The delay gave the construction crew a little leeway to complete areas like the concourses, press boxes and suites. But the field itself, aside from some patches of snow and ice that don’t ever seem to get any sun, looks ready for baseball.
