Überraschend spät wurde in der Schweiz die Maskentragpflicht im ÖV erst am 6. Juli 2020 eingeführt. Während in unseren Nachbarländern zum Schutz vor dem Coronavirus bereits seit längerem Masken getragen wurden, riet das Bundesamt für Gesundheit (BAG) beispielsweise noch im März explizit gesunden Menschen vom Tragen von Hygienemasken ab.
Als Begründung hiess es damals, man würde sich durch das Tragen von Masken nur in falscher Sicherheit wähnen und der Sicherheitsabstand von zwei Metern könnte dadurch eher missachtet werden. Der Verdacht lag allerdings in der Luft, dass so sichergestellt werden sollte, dass Hygienemasken, die damals noch Mangelware waren, dem Pflegepersonal in ausreichender Menge zur Verfügung stehen.
