July 22, 2021 A newly developed technology that will ‘pave’ the way to sustainability has been adopted by Iwata City, a growing city in Japan. Kao Specialties Americas, a US subsidiary of Tokyo-based Kao Corporation, has developed technology that incorporates recycled PET and makes asphalt “nearly five times more durable than traditional asphalt” in the paving industry. Iwata City officials have now selected the additive – called NEWTLAC 5000 – to repair the city’s roads. Japan-based pharmacy chain, Welcia, has also used the additive to pave its parking lot (car park). According to Kao, a 1,000sqm surface area with NEWTLAC reuses approximately 15,000 discarded PET bottles.
