First Thing: ex-police officer convicted of George Floyd’s murder Molly Blackall
Good morning.
A jury swiftly and unanimously convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of the murder of George Floyd yesterday, as the world watched on. Chauvin kept his knee of Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest, despite pleas from Floyd that he could not breathe and calls from passersby to stop. The case triggered waves of demonstrations against police brutality and racism in the US and around the world.
As the verdict was announced, cheers erupted in a crowd of several hundred outside the courthouse. You can look back on key moments in the trial here, and read more about the life of “gentle giant” George Floyd, the human behind the headlines.

Socially distanced archaeologists in masks trudged through the wet forests on Marylandâs eastern shore, searching for signs of a long-abandoned home.
Julie Schablitsky, the chief archeologist for Marylandâs state highway administration, used a metal detector, hoping for nails or other signs of an old building.
Instead, along the roadway, she found an 1808 coin imprinted with the word âlibertyâ.
âWhen this thing came out of the ground, I was shocked,â Schablitsky told the Guardian.
Her discovery in November became a hopeful calling card: she and her team understood they might be getting close to finding the one-time home of Ben Ross, father of the famed Underground Railroad conductor, political activist and abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
