There’s been a lot of news about the amount of plastic debris in the oceans. But plastic pollution is also affecting the Great Lakes. A study out of the Rochester Institute of Technology estimates 22 million pounds of plastic debris enters the Great Lakes from the U.S. and Canada each year.

Mary Kosuth s article on the environmental and public health concerns of plastic pollution should be a wake-up call ( Post-pandemic, plastic is the crisis we face, Opinion Exchange, Feb. 15). The COVID-19 pandemic pales before the enormity of the issue of plastic pollution. Plastics are burned in many countries, releasing cancer-causing, birth-defect-causing, lung- and brain-damaging dioxins and other chemicals into the air that eventually settle on the crops we eat and surface waters we ultimately drink.
Plastics in our oceans break down into microparticles and are in the fish we eat as well as the water we drink and air we breathe, along with toxic chemicals that adhere to these microparticles. ....

Duluth is poised to place a 5-cent plastic-bag fee on all carryout items. The bag tax will encourage residents in Duluth to start incorporating reusable bags to prevent unnecessary plastic use. Some 22 million pounds of plastic trash have been found in the Great Lakes, according to the Alliance for the Great Lakes. If we do not do more to curb littering, the number will continue to grow. States and cities need to act on the plastic-pollution problem before the problem is too much. ....
