shortly, this is live coverage on c-span 3. the committee will come to order, today we re looking at two bills, hr-8 and hr-1112 to close loopholes and strengthen our gun background check system. these bills are targeting and they take reasonable steps that an overwhelming majority of the public agrees with. 97% of americans, including 97% of republicans support universal background checks. you can t get a majority of americans to agree on anything, but they agree on this. 100 americans are killed with guns every day in this country. this is a uniquely american problem. and one of the things that democrats stated last year over and over again is that if we were fortunate enough to take back the majority here we would not sit idolly by when we re in a position to save lives. we re planning a meeting on hr-46 which uses the mechanism in the national emergencies act the president s promise at a campaign rally does not make something a national emergency. you don t have to take
