Look back at Dramatic Society of Manningham Mills | Bradford Telegraph and Argus


LOCAL historian DR PAUL JENNINGS looks back at the drama society at Lister’s Mill - part of the immense range of social, cultural and sporting activities its thousands of workers enjoyed:
The Dramatic Society made its debut in 1925 with Raffles but I begin with its 1933 production of A Lass from Lister’s, written by Herbert Wright and produced by Clara Wright. This musical comedy was largely based on the rise to fame of Pat Paterson, the Hollywood actress who was born in Bradford and had once worked in the Velvet Warehouse. The same Lister’s Magazine of January 1934, which reported on the production, also carried a photograph of her en-route for Hollywood with the actor Hugh Williams. Born Eliza Paterson in Fitzgerald Street off Manchester Road, she graduated from child acting and modelling work to films and so to Hollywood, where she enjoyed a modest career in B-movies like Charlie Chan Goes to Egypt and Bottoms Up with Spencer Tracy, in which she sang I’m Throwin ....

LISTER’S Mill has dominated the Bradford skyline since it was built in grand Italianate style in 1871.
Built by Samuel Cunliffe Lister to replace a mill that had burned down on the Manningham site, it was the world s largest velvet and silk factory in the world - an industrial giant when Bradford was leading the way in textile manufacturing.
Now home to residential, business and community use, the sprawling site was the largest mill in the north of England, with 27 acres of floor space and its imposing 249ft high chimney.
The great Manningham Mills strike in the early 1890s led directly to the founding of the Independent Labour Party. ....

THEJOURNAL.IE‘S PODCAST ‘STARDUST’ has won the Mary Raftery Prize, which is awarded for social affairs journalism on the island of Ireland.
This is the third major award the podcast has won, after winning gold at the New York Festivals Radio Awards for Best Narrative/Documentary Podcast; and winning best Radio Documentary at this year’s Celtic Media Festival.
The award was given to the Stardust podcast team who conducted interviews, researched, recorded and edited the six-part series: Sean Murray, Nicky Ryan and Christine Bohan. ....
