We will be discussing about monuments in the moralization from the late 19th to the early 21st century could help us put our continuing debate over the Meaning And Power of public monuments into a longer and more informed historical perspective. I will delve into the story of what one proposed monument meant to the civil Rights Activist and feminist, Mary Church Terrell, in light of her own history. In 1923, the United Daughters of the confederacy pressed lawmakers in the United States to create a pass a bit to pass a monument to the faithful colored mammys of the south. centennial of the 19th advancement. using images of the early suffrage leaders, miss lemay shows how the movement intersected with the abolitionist and temperance movements. this is the first ever to port program. hi everyone. welcome to the national portraits keller at the smithsonian institution. i m kate clarke lemay, and i m the director of a project of persistence. for this exhibition i worked about three and a half years researching, teaching myself the history and find myself all of the objects. in the exhibition we had about 124 objects, of which there are 64 portraits and in curating the exhibition i was hoping to commemorate the 19th amendment and tell the history of the 19th amendment and have women lobbied to get the amendment passed and ratified. and also ask questions about it, what does it, do and what does it not do. and why the voting rights act is considered part two of the 19th amendment. so if you will follow me i will take you through the exhibition, and
