WNBA agrees to sale of Atlanta Dream; Renee Montgomery becomes first former player to co-own a team

ATLANTA Real estate investor Larry Gottesdiener was approved Friday as the lead owner of the Atlanta Dream following pressure on former Sen. Kelly Loeffler to sell her share of the WNBA team.
The three-member investor group also includes former Dream guard Renee Montgomery and Suzanne Abair, president of Northland Investment Corp. in Massachusetts, the firm Gottesdiener founded.
Montgomery becomes the first former player to become both an owner and executive of a WNBA team. She sat out the 2020 season to focus on social justice issues and recently announced her retirement from the league after 11 seasons.
The approval by the WNBA and NBA Board of Governors was expected and unanimous. It means co-owner Mary Brock also sold her share of the team, which will remain in Atlanta. ....

Former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler and the other owner of the WNBA s Atlanta Dream have sold the team.
The league announced on Friday that Loeffler, who has owned the team for nearly a decade but has been at odds with many of its players over her condemnation of the Black Lives Matter movement, and Mary Brock sold their stakes in the team to Larry Gottesdiener, chairman of Northland, a national real estate firm.
“Ten years ago we stepped up to keep the Dream in Atlanta, as an important asset for a vibrant and diverse city, the women said in a joint statement. It was also important to us to help level the playing field for women’s professional sports. We are proud of what we accomplished and wish the team well in their next chapter. We will always value the hard work and dedication, and the memories, fans and friendships that sustained our commitment to the Atlanta Dream over the last decad ....

(CNN)The Atlanta Dream, the WNBA team previously co-owned by former US Sen. Kelly Loeffler, has been sold to executives from a national real estate firm and a former player.
The sale of the team to Larry Gottesdiener, chairman of the real estate firm Northland, was unanimously approved by the WNBA and the NBA Board of Governors, the league said in a statement Friday. ....
