Here’s a look at what works Up North, and some of the companies pushing the economy:
CEMENT
LaFarge North America, in Alpena, is one of the main cement companies in the region. It was founded about 106 years ago, according to an online pamphlet by the company, and has been going strong ever since.
Jeffery Scott, Alpena plant manager, said the resources in the region help to build the industry up. ....

ALPENA Right now, the Alpena area has more snow on the ground than most other parts of Michigan.
The wet, heavy snow from Saturday’s storm may be enough to lure to Northeast Michigan outdoor enthusiasts who want to snowmobile, cross-country ski, snowshoe, sled, and, soon, ice fish.
The 13 inches of snow that fell has set a good base for such activities and other winter sports. And, because few other Michigan cities have that much snow to offer, officials said there’s a chance people may stop in Alpena or neighboring communities to take advantage. ....
