Marty Tirrell, who led a complicated life as a boisterous sports-radio host and a glib conman and who was an alcoholic and gambling addict who went from living the large life with the rich and notable to being homeless and penniless, was sentenced to 41 months in prison Wednesday by Federal District Judge
Stephanie
Rose.
He also was ordered to pay more than $1.5 million in restitution to eight victims. He was not fined.
He could have been sentenced to up to 20 years and fined $250,000, but 41 months is at the top of the federal guidelines for the mail fraud he pleaded guilty to. The government had asked for 60 months. He has asked to serve his time in a prison near his boyhood home in Massachusetts. ....

A former Des Moines sports radio host will spend time in federal prison after pleading guilty to one of his 10 fraud charges in 2019.Marty Tirrell, known as the Mouth of the Midwest, was sentenced in federal court in Des Moines Wednesday. Officials say he swindled nearly $1.5 million from investors in a sports ticket deal.In court Wednesday, a judge sentenced Tirrell to 41 months in prison and three years of supervised release over what the judge called a Ponzi scheme. Tirrell was also ordered to pay restitution of nearly $1.5 million.Tirrell pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud in December of 2019. He faced nine other counts were dismissed.Tirrell cried at the sentencing Wednesday. He said he knew this day would come and regretted living on other people’s ....
