LONDON, ONT. It has been a tale of two ski chalets this winter. On the one hand, the struggling lockdown fortunes of Boler Mountain in London, and on the other hand, Circle R Ranch, which includes an operating cross-country trail system just southwest of the city limits. It has noted a small boom in business. But come Tuesday, both sites will be on equal playing fields again as the lockdown ends and downhill skiing is permitted. At Boler, Manager Marty Thody is grateful to finally get the season started, with extra help from Mother Nature. We’ve had two great snowfalls in there, plus the snowfall at Christmas to pack in with our production snow. We have some snow coming up in the forecast too. ....

After spending about $800,000 to open safely, managers at London’s Boler Mountain are now worried that recent rule changes by the province could keep the ski hill shuttered all winter. “We still don’t know whether we should be, you know, considering making more snow or not making more snow. These are expensive decisions to make,” said Boler operations director Marty Thody. The ski conditions were just about perfect on Monday, as Thody surveyed the grounds at the west London ski hill. In normal times it would be full of life. But on this day there were were no chair lifts circling. There were no children laughing. And there were no thrill seekers taking on the black diamond. ....
Over 70,000 Sign Petition Urging Ford to Open Ontario Ski Hills A petition signed by over 70,000 people is urging the Ontario government to allow skiing this winter. Launched by Bradford resident Dwayne Cardoso, the petition, which has garnered more than 70,000 supporters since Dec. 21, wants Premier Doug Ford to allow ski hills to operate during the province-wide lockdown that went into effect Saturday. “Skiing should be the safest sport to participate in with face coverings, mandatory space between patrons (skis and snowboards easily facilitate social distancing),” Cardoso said. “Riding chair lifts with only family, in a time of immense negativity, this can also help our mental health, not to mention the exercise that we all desperately want.” ....
