WASHINGTON Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) President and Chief Executive Officer Ted Lipien issued the following statement today, in reference to the December 30 signing into law by Russian President Vladimir Putin of legislation that human rights watchdogs and opposition politicians have said will undermine democratic processes:

Timur Olevskiy in Moscow in 2019.
To his Russian admirers, Timur Olevskiy is a kind of latter-day Walter Cronkite or Mike Wallace, a trusted journalist and fearless muckraker. So people in Moscow were stunned when Radio Free Europe fired Olevskiy earlier this month. The organization cited his unauthorized participation in an online discussion about Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who has blamed state forces linked to President Vladimir Putin for his near-fatal poisoning by a nerve agent this year. ....
