Because of a procedural change in how the U.S. government processes some green cards, faith communities across the country may lose thousands of leaders and workers. There’s suddenly a nearly five-year wait for green cards for religious workers, meaning most of those now here on temporary visas won’t be able to stay long enough to get one. That’s because this spring, the State Department started counting in their green card queue also the growing number of visa applications by vulnerable minors from Central America who crossed into the U.S. illegally. Attorneys say faith leaders will have to leave precisely when the U.S. needs them most because of a surge in immigrant congregations requiring ministers with foreign language skills.
