CMS Grades Point To Where COVID-19 Has Hit Hardest


Oakdale Elementary students returned to in-person classes for the second time in mid-February.
In the first semester of last school year, 3% of Oakdale Elementary School’s third-graders got a D or F in reading. That was before the pandemic.
This year, with a fluctuating mix of remote and in-person classes, 69% of Oakdale’s third-graders fell below a C.
That’s one of the more extreme swings, but data on classroom grades provided by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools shows many schools have taken dramatic hits on measures of academic performance during the pandemic. Almost always, they’re schools like Oakdale in north Charlotte, a high-poverty neighborhood school where more than 80% of students are Black or Hispanic. ....

Weakley County Students Write Their Way to Recognition

Martin Middle School had several students excel in the UTM Young Writers Contest. Libby Adkins won in the Personal Essay category. Corrina Boyd received a certificate of recognition in the Dramatic Script category. For the Flash Fiction category, Asa Barnes was the winner. Emily Scott (not pictured) won in the Short Story contest. Her award is displayed by Becky Mullins, the sponsoring teacher.

WEAKLEY COUNTY (December 17) – When the pandemic shut down the possibility of a University of Tennessee at Martin Young Writers Conference, organizers offered area students the chance to compete in a first-ever Young Writers Contest instead. Corpus Christi ISD names four new elementary principals
Corpus Christi ISD named four new elementary school principals who will take their roles when the district reopens on Jan. 4, 2021, after the winter break.
Kelsie Morris will be the principal of Kolda Elementary School, following the retirement of founding principal Josie Alvarez, a news release said.
Morris has been the principal of Kostoryz Elementary School since 2017. A graduate of Ray High School, Morris earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and master’s degrees in counseling and educational administration from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
Stevie Rae Garcia, who has served as an assistant principal at Kostoryz since 2017, is the school’s new principal. ....

JACKSON, Miss. (WLOX) - The Mississippi State Department of Health has released its weekly report on the number of coronavirus cases in schools for each county.
The report lists the number of staff members and students who tested positive for the virus, as well as the number of staff and students who were quarantined.
This report is only for cases reported the week of Dec. 7-11, 2020.
