AFI leaders work out next move after Alex Salmond leads Alba 'takeover'

THE NEC of Action for Independence (AFI), the fledgling pro-independence party that launched the “Max the Yes” concept for the Holyrood election, was due to consider its next moves last night after the launch of Alex Salmond’s Alba Party.
Members were notified by email after Alba’s launch that its list candidates for the May 6 poll would be stood down amid developments that had been a “game changer” for AFI.
They were told: “That is a great compliment to all of you who have pioneered the ‘Max the Yes’ concept and the drive for a ‘supermajority’ in May.”
An email from Salmond was also copied in to them thanking them for preparing the groundwork: “I recognise that you were there first and Alba hope to carry the torch of independence forward into the next Scottish Parliament.” ....

THE People’s Action on Section 30 is an “important constitutional case” dealing with the safeguarding of “the principle of democracy”, the Court of Session has heard.
Aidan O’Neill, QC, told the court yesterday – the 701st anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath – that he made no apology for starting with a document signed in 1320 because they were dealing with the “specific Scottish constitutional tradition, which … has emphasised the principle of democracy and the principle of the sovereignty of the people”.
Appeal judges are hearing the case brought by independence campaigner Martin Keatings on behalf of the Forward As One group, in which he is asking the court to declare the Scottish Parliament already has the power to legislate for indyref2 without “consent” from Westminster. ....

Judges should rule on whether Scotland can hold a second independence referendum without Westminster’s consent before the Holyrood election so that people do not have to vote “in ignorance”, a court has heard.
Appeal judges are hearing a case brought forward by Martin Keatings on behalf of the Forward As One group, asking the court to declare the Scottish Parliament has the power to legislate for another vote.
After a two-day hearing in January, Lady Carmichael dismissed the case – ruling it was “plainly raised prematurely” and that the question of another referendum was “also hypothetical, and may never come to pass”. ....
