A fire sparked by a lightning strike destroys Hutchinson home


A pre-dawn lightning strike sparked a fire in a southside Hutchinson home Friday morning that fire officials say they were unable to get to due to hoarding conditions inside the house.
Officials were preparing late Friday morning to bulldoze the 848-square-foot single-story house because it continued to present a danger, said Hutchinson Fire Marshal Tony Arpin.
The two-bedroom Bungalow at 550 Ave. D was packed so densely with possessions that firefighters were unable to get inside, and though the fire was contained and mostly out by 8:50 a.m., firefighters suspected hot spots inside the house continued to burn, Arpin said.
Due to the horrific hoarder conditions, Fire Chief Steve Beer noted in a release, it took firefighters over an hour to bring the fire under control. Firefighters were able to control the fire spread to adjacent structures. ....

Hutchinson's recent fires caused by cigarettes, arson, controlled burns.


Fire officials say there were multiple causes for wildfires that have beleaguered the county over the past couple of weeks, from discarded cigarettes to arson.
The main culprit appears to have been motorists discarding cigarettes out vehicle windows while driving down the road.
Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer, however, also blamed embers from controlled burns kicked up by high winds and carried some distance away to spark new fires.
He asked the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday for help negotiating with the county on imposing more burn bans when conditions dictate.
Half of recent fires caused by cigarettes
Hutchinson Fire Marshal Tony Arpin said two of four fires in the last week were determined to have been caused by cigarettes. Those included a fire that started along 43rd Avenue and burned 80- to 100-acres and another small fire on 56th Avenue. ....
